It's probably a pet peeve (rant)
Is anybody else bothered by the "probably" advice? Yesterday, I arrived on campus for my yoga class with only a couple minutes to spare, and I had to use the bathroom. Hoping to save some time, I asked someone in the hall if she knew where it was. She said, "I don't know." Which is fine, but then, as if trying to be helpful, she added, "It's probably near the drinking fountain."

I am old enough to know that in most public buildings, the restroom is "probably" near the drinking fountain. I don't need someone to tell me where the bathroom "probably" is. I did not ask her to tell me where it "probably" is. I asked her if she knew where it is. (It was not, by the way, near the drinking fountain.)

Then, someone else -- a man, no less, who could be expected to have even less knowledge about where the women's bathroom is -- overheard this exchange and offered even more useless advice. "It's probably back that way," he said. Oh, thank you, sir! That really helps!
